Hey nonprofit organizations…are you in?

In the program that is.  It’s called the Microsoft Open Charity Licensing Program.  The program entitles nonprofits an 80% discount on everything that can be purchased through Microsoft.  I’m sure you’re asking yourself, “Why would a computer consultant write about this?”  The answer is because I work with nonprofit organizations all the time.  Through my experience I have noticed that the nonprofits never know about the Open Charity Licensing Program.  Most companies run Microsoft software already…so, if you’re a nonprofit organization, it makes sense to at least inquire about whether you are in this program.

Minimum of 5 licenses:
If you qualify for the Microsoft Open Charity Licensing Program, you must initially purchase 5 licenses in order to join the program.  Single license purchases can be purchased after the initial 5.

Differences between Open Charity and retail copies of Microsoft software:
Instead of buying a physical box of software for each computer in your organization as you would through retail, with Microsoft Open Charity License you need to only purchase one media kit (aka: one software cd) for the software, and then purchase enough licenses to cover the remaining amount of computers.

Your Questions Answered

Anthony,

I’m a part of a church located in the Main Line area.  I’m interested in seeing whether my organization is currently in the Open Charity Program, or whether we are eligible to be in the program.  What types of documentation do I need in order to determine whether we’re eligible?

Isabel, Ardmore, PA

Hello Isabel,

For starters, you will need to find a legal document for your organization.  Microsoft will want a copy of this document so they can check your organization in a database of eligible nonprofits.

Try this:

Locate your organizations §501(c)(3) form and contact Microsoft at 1(800) 426-9400 to check to see if your organization qualifies.  It’s a free call.  Oh, and don’t forget…when you get approved for this program, be sure to call Spidernet Technical Consulting, LLC to get you up and running with your new software!
